How does data get fragmented?
The day-to-day functions of using your computer, such as saving files, deleting files, installing new software, and downloading files, cause data to become fragmented. Files are stored in free space on your hard drive. If the first available free space isn't big enough to hold the whole file, the file will be fragmented so that part of it fits in that free space and the rest of the file is put in the next available free space.
