Troubleshooting Customized Forms That Don't Print to the Right Printer
in a Network Environment
Printing on a network requires that the name of a printer used on the server be the same name used on all client machines as well. This is important since different operating systems may identify printers differently. If the printers in your network do not have the same names on the server and on all client machines, customized forms designed to print to a specific printer may not go to the desired printer.
To ensure that such customized forms print to the right printer, select your Windows operating system from the list below and follow the steps:
Printer name
- On the server and all client machines in the network, go to the Windows Start menu, and then select Devices and Printers.
- In the Printers and Faxes area, note the name of the printer that the customized form is designed to print to. The printer name on the server and all clients must exactly match the name of this printer.
- So that printer names match, edit them as needed. In the Printer window, right-click the printer icon, and then change the name.
Share name
- On the server, go to the Windows Start menu, and then select Devices and Printers.
- In the Printers and Faxes area, right-click the icon of the printer that customized forms are designed to print to.
- From the right-click menu, select Printer properties.
- Select the Sharing tab.
- In the Share name text box, note the printer's share name. This must be a legal, maximum eight-character name. If it is not, any client machines with an operating system different from that of the server will not recognize the printer, and so customized forms won't print to it. Change the share name as needed.
